What's your carbon footprint? Government launches calculator 'to help us go green'

Households are being urged to step up their personal battle against climate change by using a new ecocalculator going live online today.

They will be able to work out their carbon footprint by inputting details of their transport and home energy use. The device will be divided into three sections:

• Appliances - size and type of TV, do you have a dishwasher, washing machine and fridge? How much do you fill the kettle, do you leave items on stand-by and do you hang out clothes or use a tumble dryer?

• Home heating - type of boiler installation and fuel.

• Transport - if you have a car, what size engine does it have? How often do you fly?

Launching the on-line calculator at an eco-internet cafe at Waterloo, Environment Secretary David Miliband said: "There is a lot of confusion about what people can do and how effective those changes actually are. We want to cut through that, and this carbon calculator is one of the ways they can do this and be sure it will make a difference.

"Using it, people can work out the impact of their actions and identify the best way to reduce their footprint.

"As the calculator improves and develops, I want it to become the gold standard for calculating CO2 emissions from individuals and families."

The device can work out individuals' or households' green profiles and offers personalised action plans to cut emissions of harmful greenhouse gases by 20 per cent.

The "Act on CO2" calculator can be found at www.direct.gov.uk/actonCO2

The Government is seeking to make Britain a world leader in tackling global warming. However, latest figures showed our CO2 emissions rose last year.
