Which is the best store? John Lewis
28 June 2007
The chain beat off competition from Marks & Spencer and discount supermarket Aldi in the first awards held by consumer group Which?.
The group said high levels of customer satisfaction clinched the win for the department store, and, although not the best for price and convenience, its products were of excellent quality and therefore good value for money.
Which? added the chain, which is owned by its staff, was "streets ahead of all the other retailers".
John Lewis's food division, Waitrose, was rewarded for its expansion into the hi-tech market, when it was given the accolade of Best Broadband Provider.
The awards were among 10 handed out to major companies in all sectors in a ceremony hosted by newsreader Fiona Bruce at the British Museum yesterday.
Electronics company Panasonic was rewarded with the Heritage Award for being the best brand overall, after 50 years in the industry and 222 awards. Which? awarded Japanese car firm Toyota with Best Car Manufacturer.
Which? chief executive Peter Vicary-Smith said: "People know they can absolutely trust the Which? name, so they will also know that these Which? Award winners really are the best of the best."
