Whole Foods looks for store in the City
01 February 2008
It is understood that the American supermarkets group is casting around in the Square Mile for a site to complement its flagship store opened last year in Kensington which has been the subject of mixed reviews and reports of mixed trading.
The purveyor of pricey foods is believed to have contacted property agents and developers including British Land, whose landmark 201 Bishopsgate and Broadgate Tower developments which have retail space will open in stages from next month.
It seems likely that Whole Foods is not aiming to replicate the 80,000 sq ft over three floors of its Kensington supermarket, mainly because that sort of location is just not available in the City.
It may even struggle to find a site equivalent to the 17,000 sq ft upmarket food hall John Lewis opened at its Oxford Street store in what was seen as a response to the new competition of Whole Foods.
The American company did not deny it is eyeing the City.
"As a company we are always on the look out for new locations but never comment on speculation," a spokesman said.
