Despite turning down the England job two years ago, citing a desire to keep his family out of the media glare, "Big Phil" has been persuaded by Roman Abramovich to give up coaching Portugal for the Blues. Scolari, a devout Catholic who is married to his childhood sweetheart, will be the best-paid coach in the Premiership on a salary of £5.5 million a year.

A former Fox executive, Los Angeles-born Bartlett has stepped into Dawn Airey's shoes after she abruptly quit the broadcaster to return to Five. He will oversee its UK and international production and distribution businesses - considered a key growth area for ITV as it faces falling advertising revenues at home. He is incredibly well-connected, counting Simon Cowell and Simon Fuller among his friends. The talk is that a partnership with one of them could be on the cards.

Owner of Mahiki, a favourite night-time haunt of Princes William and Harry and a fixture on the capital's social scene. Last week, he and business partner Nick House opened Whisky Mist, a new bar in Park Lane intended to appeal to an older crowd than Mahiki. The hope is to roll out both brands globally.

His bold move may backfire. The working-class boy made good, who grew up on a housing estate in Tooting, has admitted his decision to force a by-election could mark the end of his frontbench career. But in launching his one-man crusade for civil liberties, Davis has won grass-root support and made himself an unlikely hero for British liberals. A tough talker who still has a close band of supporters within the party, he's not out of the game yet.

The River Cottage presenter-turned-campaigner has won the first battle in his bid to take on Tesco over its treatment of chickens. Forced by the supermarket chain to stump up more than £85,000 to get his complaints heard by shareholders, Fearnley-Whittingstall managed to raise the cash in two days.

Following in the footsteps of his late father Roy, the Oxford-educated stage star, who trained with the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, has been widely praised for his dark performance in The Revenger's Tragedy at the National. Nicknamed "Rory Career" by friends because of his motivation, the Olivier award-winner is also appearing as Dennis Thatcher in The Long Walk To Finchley and makes his big-screen debut in the next Bond movie.
