Why Peta think there's something fishy about the living conditions of Channel Five's pets

In the welter of quick-flying opinions and heated debate they are an oasis of silent calm.

But storm clouds are gathering over the resident goldfish on the often controversial chatshow The Wright Stuff.

Animal rights activists are demanding the fish, named Brad and Jen, be moved from their ‘small bowl’ which gives them no place to ‘hide and explore’.

Campaign: The Wright Stuff's Brad and Jen are at the centre of an animal rights group's bid to get the fish more space

The goldfish bowl has pride of place on outspoken presenter Matthew Wright’s desk during the Channel 5 morning show.

Their serene, if somewhat aimless, lives had attracted little comment until members of animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals got on the case.

Now Peta vice-president Bruce Friedrich has written to the programme demanding Brad and Jen are removed and placed in a new, larger home.

His letter said: ‘Goldfish might be small and somewhat alien to us, but I’m certain you’ll agree that they are worthy of care and respect.

Host: Matthew Wright has the goldfish in a fishbowl on his desk

‘Goldfish have personalities and abilities that most people don’t know about.’

Mr Friedrich urged the show to find the fish ‘a more suitable permanent home in a large tank with places to hide and explore for stimulation’.

Tim Cunningham, of The Wright Stuff, replied: ‘We care a great deal for our goldfish and our resident vet Joe Inglis will investigate this when he is in the studio next week.

‘If he thinks the fish’s welfare is in question, we will of course take appropriate action.’

Animal rights group Peta say goldfish have emotions and the pair who live in a bowl in Channel Five have no where to play and hide
