William drums up a storm to celebrate Scouts' centenary Jamboree

Prince William today 'felt the beat' as he joined tens of thousands of youngsters from around the world as he celebrated the centenary of Scouting.

The Prince opened the 21st World Scout Jamboree in Chelmsford, almost 100 years to the day since Robert Baden-Powell launched the Scout movement.

He toured Hylands Park and was given a flavour of scouting activities around the globe and found time for an impromptu jam session with some of the scouts.

William begins his visit with an impromptu 'jam' at the Jamboree....

The Scout Association says almost every country in the world - including Iraq and Afghanistan - is represented at the 12-day festival.

Around 40,000 youngsters are taking part in the biggest event in the history of scouting - and one of the biggest gatherings of any kind seen in the UK.

The Prince sipped tea in a traditional Bedouin tent with scouts from Saudi Arabia, discussed HIV and sustainable development with youngsters from South Africa and joined an international band by beating out a rhythm on an African drum.

... he then finds to time to 'tell a few royal tales'....

The Prince also blew the Kudu - a horn blown by Baden-Powell in 1907 to open the first scout camp on Brownsea Island off Poole, Dorset.

The instrument is made from the horn of an African antelope and will be blown again at Brownsea Island on Wednesday to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the day when the Scout movement began.

As he toured the camp, the Prince was given scores of neckerchiefs by different scouts.

He managed to pile about a dozen around his neck and handed the rest to an aide.

.... and finishes his visit by playing ball
