Gordon Thomson jumped on Elizabeth Hingston's leg with both feet after she had placed it over a concrete brick.
The pair then planned to sue their local council by claiming a wall had fallen on top of her.
But they were foiled when police raided Thomson's home and found "sickening" mobile phone footage of him inflicting the injury.

Break a leg: Gordon Thomson is to be sentenced for breaking his girlfriend's leg in an insurance scam
Thomson, a 32-year-old unemployed chef, faces jail after pleading guilty yesterday to unlawfully and maliciously causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
Miss Hingston, who has since split from Thomson, is not facing charges but a judge said the 24-year-old was "lucky not to be in court herself". Precise details of the attempted swindle, which took place in October last year, were not revealed in court.
But one of Thomson's friends who has seen the film said the couple had been going out for only two months when the incident happened.
She added: "They shot it in a house and you can see Elizabeth lie on the floor. Gordon, who is a big guy, then jumped on her leg with both feet.
"It was horrible - you could hear a cracking sound. It still makes me sick thinking about it."
Police said the 20-second footage, which is thought to have been filmed by a third party, was discovered when they raided Thomson's home in Plymouth on an unrelated matter.

A spokesman for Plymouth police said: "We had been called to his house with a warrant for another issue when certain paperwork was found.
"It had been filled out with the intention of making a claim against the council but it had not yet been sent in.
"We also discovered a mobile phone containing footage of the incident. It was particularly horrible and nasty and featured images and audio of a leg being broken."
He added: "Only they know why they decided to film it and provide the evidence which convicted him."
A source said the couple hoped to claim up to £100,000 from Plymouth City Council.
Bob Linford, mitigating, said: "This was a one-off incident caused by Elizabeth Hingston and Thomson trying to inflict fraud on the local authority."
He added: "There is a victim in this case but she was a victim of her own making."
Plymouth Crown Court was told Thomson had suffered psychiatric problems.
But Mr Linford said: "Whatever problems he has, they are not anything to do with this offence."
Thomson, of Plymouth, was remanded in custody. Sentencing was adjourned until next month for psychiatric reports but Judge Frances Gilbert warned him to expect a prison sentence.
Hingston was unavailable for comment yesterday at her home in Plymouth.
Her mother said: "She doesn't want to talk about it. As far as she is concerned, the matter is over."
