Women driver survives after freak 80-foot cliff plunge

A woman survived after driving a Land Rover over a cliff and onto a beach 80 feet below today, a police spokesman said.

She left a car park above the Marsden Grotto pub in South Shields, South Tyneside, at 5.17am and drove across a grassed area on the cliff-top, through a metal fence, before plunging the vehicle over the edge.

The 29-year-old managed to escape from the blue Land Rover Discovery and the emergency services, contacted by a passer-by, took her to South Tyneside General Hospital.

Her condition was "poorly but not life-threatening", a Northumbria Police spokesman said.

Officers were investigating the circumstances of the fall, he added.

The Marsden Grotto pub is well-known locally, and is built into the cliff-face, with access from the beach as well as a lift from the car park above.

A tow-truck was called to winch the wreck back up the cliff-face
