Women in City paid a third less than men

WOMEN who work in the City are paid one third less than male colleagues.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics show that men earn more than women in 30 of the capital's 33 local authorities but the wage gap is largest in the Square Mile.

After the City, the biggest gaps - of more than 28 per cent - were in Westminster, Hammersmith and Fulham, and Islington.

But women earn more than men in Haringey (5.9 per cent more), Lewisham (3.3 per cent) and Enfield (1.8 per cent).

Mary Honeyball, Labour MEP for London, who commissioned the research, said: "This comes down to discrimination. Sometimes women are paid less for doing exactly the same job as a man, but mostly women just don't get the high-paid jobs in the first place."

The average pay gap in the UK is 17 per cent but in London it is 19 per cent. In Europe it is 15 per cent. Ms Honeyball said: "We need to get women to make more of a fuss, in the same way that men would."
