Wonderful pictures: The day April showers turned Britain white

It ruined many a game of golf, as the little white balls would have been rather difficult to spot.

Yesterday's blizzards, which saw up to three inches of snow in southern England, were the first significant April snowfalls since 1989.

The contrast with the same day last year, when sun-seekers packed Brighton beach, could not have been more stark.

Many roads were affected by the difficults conditions and the Met Office issued a number of flash warnings of severe or extreme weather.

Emergency services were called to a string of accidents in the treacherous conditions.

One motorist died after his car skidded off a road and plunged into the River Gade in Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire.

More snow is expected today, mostly in the North, and showers of snow, sleet and rain will continue until Wednesday.
