World Cup tourists get less for their money

Football fans heading for South Africa for this summer's World Cup will find their holiday money stretching far less than it would have done last year, it was revealed today.

The South African rand is one of the few world currencies to have strengthened against the pound, having risen 13% since this time last year, a report from Post Office Travel Money said.

The company said the World Cup was a great tourist opportunity for South Africa but added that "the weak pound could put paid to this".

Its report showed that Jamaica, Egypt and Dubai topped the list of destinations where UK holidaymakers will have the most extra cash in their pocket at the moment, thanks to the strengthening of the pound.

Spain is the cheapest eurozone destination at present, but Turkey - a good-value destination in 2009 - has seen costs rise sharply.

Post Office Travel Money looked at the cost of eight typical tourist items of spending, including a meal out, suncream, a cup of coffee and a packet of cigarettes.

Hungary, where the eight items cost just £35.72, was the cheapest of the 30 countries surveyed. The cost of the items in Spain was £44.84, while in Brazil - the most expensive country in the survey - it was as much as £101.81.

Post Office Travel Money head Sarah Munro said: "The eurozone looks to be striking back after the battering its resorts took in 2009 when Post Office euro sales were down over 14%.

"There is an underlying reduction in eurozone prices and, when you add the improved exchange rate to this, the outlook looks relatively sunny for UK holidaymakers."

She went on: "Judging by the price rises recorded in our latest cost comparison survey, Turkey is unlikely to be the cheap destination that it was just a couple of years ago when the Post Office barometer identified the country as a best buy."
