World has failed the people of Darfur, says Condoleezza

Condoleezza Rice today said the world has failed the people of Darfur.

The US Secretary of State said the international community had not done enough to help the stricken Sudanese region.

Speaking before a summit on the region, Dr Rice said: "I do not think the international community has really lived up to its responsibilities here."

The US, France, China and Egypt will attend the Paris meeting to discuss the state of the region, where some 200,000 people have died and 2.4 million have fled the violence since 2003.

French foreign minister Bernard Kouchner, speaking alongside Dr Rice, said: "I know that it has been going on for years. So what? Is that a reason to not be interested and let the massacres go on for ever?"
