'Silence of the Lambs' rapist to be deported back to Britain

A British man who kidnapped, tortured and raped a young woman in a crime likened to the horror film The Silence of the Lambs today lost his fight against deportation from Australia to the UK.
Leslie Cunliffe, who is in his sixties, posed as a policeman to kidnap a 21-year-old student in 1999. He locked her in a garage with padded walls near Melbourne, strapped a fake bomb to her and demanded a ransom of a million Australian dollars from her family.
His victim was gagged and tied to a chair but was freed within hours when he went to buy food and a woman heard her scream for help.
Cunliffe was paroled last April after serving 12 years in jail but Australian authorities started proceedings to have him deported.
Today Federal Court Justice Julie Dodds-Streeton refused his appeal to remain in the country.
Australian MP Darren Cheeseman said: "The government is contacting the UK, where he is a citizen, to arrange his deportation."
