You can't drive me out of F1

Ron Dennis insisted today he will not be driven out of Formula One despite his McLaren team being hit by a record £50million fine for the pit-lane spy scandal.

The defiant boss was stunned by the punishment imposed by the FIA's World Motor Sport Council in Paris which also saw McLaren docked all of their points from the constructors' championship.

Many claim FIA president Max Mosley has staged a witch-hunt against Dennis, who he dislikes, and that yesterday's fine may have been part of a personal vendetta.

But 60-year-old Dennis vowed: "My personal future was never in question as far as I was concerned. I am very committed to this company, very passionate about motor racing and I have absolutely no intention of retiring.

"We have two of the best drivers in the world, and our commitment to winning races is undiminished. That's what we exist to do, to win races."

The one saving grace for McLaren was that title leader, Britain's Lewis Hamilton, and second placed team-mate Fernando Alonso have kept their points and will continue racing, starting with this weekend's Belgian Grand Prix.

However, even if one of them goes on to win the championship critics will see it as a tainted title with McLaren having been accused by the FIA of cheating as a result of yesterday's decision.

The controversy centred around McLaren's chief designer, Mike Coughlan, coming into possession of a 780-page document containing technical secrets belonging to arch-rivals Ferrari.

The FIA were set to explain their motives behind the decision today.

But Dennis, who may appeal, said: "I'm not going to make any comment as to the FIA's findings other than the fact that we are firmly of the opinion that we definitely do not concur with their findings.

"But until we have all the details from the FIA, it is impossible for me to have a position on it. However, I do not accept that we deserve to be penalised or our reputation damaged in this way."
