Young people 'feel bored and neglected'

A majority of young people feel unsafe, neglected and bored outside school, according to a national inquiry into youth released today.

The investigation found that in the past year 60 per cent of young people in deprived areas had been victims of crime in their community, more than 70 per cent of 11-to 16-year-olds had witnessed anti-social behaviour and 12 per cent belonged to a gang.

The Make Space Youth Review for charity 4Children questioned more than 16,000 teenagers and calls for "radical" government investment and action to transform the lives of troubled teenagers.

The review, chaired by former MP Oona King, will be presented to the Prime Minister.

It claims more than one million pupils could be left wandering the streets over the coming holidays.

The review also highlighted that, with the annual cost of putting a young person in a detention centre running at £35,000, youth crime costs up to £13billion per year, compared with £1.6billion spent on youth programmes.

Ms King said: "We are simply not doing enough to help the next generation to flourish. On average we spend 17p for each young person per day on youth services and this has to change."
