Young Vic asks fans for conkers

The Young Vic has launched a conker appeal to safeguard performances of its children's Christmas show, The Forest.

The Southwark theatre needs 500 conkers to cover the stage for every show, which recreates a forest, but 10,000 are needed for the entire run as audience members tend to take them home.

It is making an appeal on its Facebook page for people to collect the conkers. There was a shortage last year after a deadly fungus affected some horse chestnut trees, although the mild spring followed by a hot but damp summer was expected to boost the crop this autumn.

The Forest is produced by Fevered Sleep, an associate company of the Young Vic. It is aimed at five- to seven-year-olds. The collection point for the conkers will be in the Young Vic's foyer.

The Forest is at the Lyric Hammersmith from tomorrow until 1 November and then at the Young Vic from 9 to 24 December.
