Youth offenders make anti-crime movie

A film by young offenders which deals with the tragic effects of knife and gang crime is being screened in London tonight.

Postcode, pictured right, was produced, written, edited and acted by more than 20 young people from Southwark, some of whom have knife convictions.

It tells the story of best friends Marcus and Gareth, one of whom is stabbed by a gang from a neighbouring postcode.

Southwark council's Youth Offending Service manager Chris Domeney said: "Some young people mistakenly think carrying a weapon protects them. This film shows that this is a fallacy."

Kris Deedigan, 28 of My Life Productions, added: "On day one the kids didn't want to open up about their lives. Once they realised they were going to be responsible for the film they came out of their shells. It has given them interpersonal skills, making them more employable and less likely to reoffend."

Postcode is on at 6.30pm at Peckham Multiplex alongside short films A Mother's Tear and Don't Doubt The Outcome.
