The monarch's 26-year-old granddaughter was watched by her mother Princess Anne, brother Peter, stepfather Vice Admiral Timothy Laurence, and rugby player boyfriend Mike Tindall.
Dressed in a black double-breasted military frock coat with gold trim and buttons, Zara was told by the Queen: "You look lovely!"
Zara - who while waiting to receive her honour had jokingly shown other recipients how to curtsey - kissed her grandmother on both cheeks and said a gracious thank you before proudly showing off her medal for the cameras.
Zara, who won gold at the World Equestrian Games last year and followed in her mother's footsteps to become BBC Sports Personality of the Year, was made an MBE for services to equestrianism, the first senior royal to receive such an honour.
