16 feared dead in helicopter crash

Sixteen people are feared dead after a helicopter crashed in the North Sea.

Eight bodies have already been recovered after the Bond-operated aircraft returning from the BP Miller platform went down off the Aberdeenshire coast.

An extensive search for another eight people who are still missing has been called off for the night. It is expected to resume on Thursday morning.

The Queen has sent a private letter of condolence to the families of the victims of the helicopter disaster.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown expressed his condolences and Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond said he was "shocked and saddened" by the incident.

The Super Puma aircraft went down 14 miles from Peterhead in Aberdeenshire, just before 2pm on Wednesday.

It issued a mayday that was picked up by air traffic controllers and a major rescue operation was launched.

Eight bodies were later recovered from the water by the support vessel, Caledonia Victory.

Grampian Police said it had "increasing and grave concerns" for those still missing.

Brian Taylor of the drilling contractor KCA Deutag said he believed ten of his crew were on board, nine from the UK and one from Europe.
