£1.7m cannabis haul seized at port

Port officials have seized cannabis with a street value of £1.7 million, the UK Border Agency (UKBA) has said.

The drugs were found in a shipping container at Felixstowe docks in Suffolk last week.

Suspicions were aroused by paperwork that listed the shipment of 30 cardboard boxes as both wooden bowls and moisturising cream.

When they opened the boxes, UKBA officials found each contained 20 slabs of herbal cannabis wrapped in plastic.

To try to avoid detection, the smugglers had stuck a "danger" sign on the container.

The drugs were shipped from Durban in South Africa, and were headed for the north-west of England.

UKBA deputy regional director Jim Jarvie said: "This is a substantial seizure and an excellent result.

"Drug smugglers are criminals who are only out to make a profit and care nothing for the devastating impact their illegal trade has on communities and individuals.

"We will continue to fight the threat that drug smuggling poses to the UK."
