2012 Olympics gets inspectors boost

London's preparations for the 2012 Olympics has been given the thumbs up from inspectors - who even said they liked its much-hated logo.

The three-day inspection by the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) Co-ordination Commission ended with it declaring that London is "operationally and financially on track".

Following a disastrous week triggered by the launch of its graffiti-style Olympic logo, it was probably the best day London 2012 has had since it won the right to host the Games in Singapore in 2005.

Of the controversial logo Denis Oswald, chairman of the 16-strong commission, said: "I love it."

The IOC signed off on the logo in February.

He told a news conference: "The first thing I thought then is that it is a fantastic logo - very creative, very young and dynamic which includes a lot of flexibility about how it can be used. I was very enthusiastic, because people are criticising it I would not change my mind."

Earlier Tony Blair said the logo had a lot of plus points.

London 2012 organisers have been under siege since the logo was launched last week, triggering more than 48,000 signatures on a petition calling for it to be scrapped.

Changes of political leader, from Tony Blair to Gordon Brown, and even the possibly of a political change over in the future, would not hinder preparations, Mr Oswald predicted.

Mr Oswald said the IOC had been "very impressed" with what they had seen this week. He added that there is an "an excellent team in place who work together with real spirit".
