£275-a-head cost of crime

The cost of tackling recorded crime is £15 billion a year or £275 per person, according to a new report.

The Taxpayers' Alliance said the cost of crimes reported to police in England, Wales and Northern Ireland was highest in Nottinghamshire at £390 a head, £2 higher than in London.

However, the total was far lower than a previous estimate compiled by the Home Office, which put the cost of all crime at an annual £60 billion.

The campaign group said violent crime including murder and serious assaults led to the highest cost, at £155 per person on average based on 2007 figures.

It called for police bureaucracy to be cut and for fewer police targets.

Matthew Sinclair, of the Taxpayers' Alliance, said: "Every one of us pays a steep price for high crime rates, particularly those living in urban areas.

"The problem is that politicians in Whitehall insist on micro-managing the police.

"If the Government give people the information and the power to tailor their local police force to their local needs, we will be able to drive crime levels down and improve the lives of millions."

Shadow home secretary Dominic Grieve said: "This report provides a stark illustration of the cost of Labour's failure on crime.

"It confirms what we have been saying for some time - that we need urgent action to slash unnecessary paperwork to get officers back on the streets, as well as action to restore local accountability in policing."
