2,800 staff 'facing the axe at BBC'

Cost cutting at the BBC could mean as many as 2,800 staff lose their jobs, it has been reported.

Factual programming may be worst hit if the BBC Trust approves plans to slash the workforce by 12%, according to the Financial Times.

Director general Mark Thompson is seeking budget cuts of 6% in each of the next five years to make up a £2bn shortfall between the licence fee settlement and the funds he had wanted.

He is expected to outline his plans to the BBC Trust on October 17, the newspaper reports.
