32 sex offenders in armed services

05 January 2009
It emerged after the case of a 22-year-old Army private who was jailed for sex offences against two children.
Callum Sandeman is now set to be discharged from the army - but he could have remained on active duty if he had avoided prison.
"In the event that a soldier is placed on the Sex Offenders Register but not given a custodial sentence, they may be retained in the Army in exceptional circumstances," a Ministry of Defence spokesman said.
"This would only be considered after a panel has assessed the soldier's employability and risk to others.
"As Private Sandeman was given a custodial sentence this clearly does not apply in this case."
The spokesman confirmed that there are 32 registered sex offenders currently serving in the British armed forces.
"That's correct," he said.
"If they are retained within the armed forces, they will be treated like any other serviceman.
"They could be deployed like other soldiers could be deployed."
