36,500 prisoners released early

More than 36,500 criminals have been let out of prison early under government measures to reduce prison overcrowding, the Ministry of Justice said.

Some 2,486 prisoners were released early last month, bringing the total number of prisoners let out under the scheme to 36,661.

Among those released in August was a man jailed for a sex crime, the MoJ said.

Other criminals released last month included 60 robbers, more than 200 burglars and 100 people convicted of drugs offences, the latest statistics revealed.

During August, 42 prisoners let out under the scheme were brought back to prison because they committed further crimes.

End of Custody Licence (ECL) allows prisoners serving up to four years to be released 18 days early. It was brought in last June to ease the crisis in prisoner numbers.

Ministers predicted 25,500 prisoners would be released in the first year.

More than 100 prisoners freed under the scheme are on the run after being told to come back to jail, the figures show.

The sex offender was serving a sentence of less than a year, the MoJ said, and his crime was not serious enough to force him to sign the sex offenders register.

Registered sex offenders are excluded from early release, as are murderers, people convicted of serious assault, child cruelty and explosives offences.
