50 people hurt in M-way coach crash

Fifty people were injured in a motorway crash involving a coach and a lorry, the ambulance service said.

The collision happened on the northbound carriageway of the M42 in Worcestershire.

The driver of the coach, a man in his 40s, was airlifted to Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham with pelvic injuries after being freed by firefighters.

A woman in her 50s, suffering from back pain, and two men with minor injuries were also taken to hospital.

The driver of the lorry, a man believed to be in his 40s, was one of a further 46 "walking wounded" who were transferred from the scene of the crash - between junctions 3 and 3a - to Warwick motorway services, where they were treated by ambulance crews.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "On arrival at the scene, crews found a coach and a lorry which had been in collision. The lorry suffered rear-end damage and the coach front-end damage.

"Clearly this had the potential to be a much more serious incident and West Midlands Ambulance Service called upon a large number of resources to ensure that all patients received the best possible treatment as quickly as possible."
