56 believed dead in plane crash

All 56 passengers and crew on board an Atlasjet plane that crashed before landing in central Turkey appear to have died, an airline official has said.

Atlasjet chief executive Tuncay Doganer said: "There is no sign of any survivors according to our initial reports. Our hope is that there are some survivors"

The plane's wreckage was seen by a police helicopter near the town of Keciborlu in Isparta province, and search-and-rescue teams were heading to the area, local governor Alper Faruk Gungor said.

The plane went off the radar just before landing.

The MD 83 passenger jet took off from Istanbul at 01.55am (11.55pm GMT), heading for Isparta
