The fire brigade were called to Poynters Lane, Great Wakering, near Southend-on-Sea in Essex, at around 4.45pm on Friday.

Neil Fenwick, from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, said gales blew flames across the area, destroying two buildings.

He said: "I haven't attended an incident such as this in many years.

"Firefighters put up a valiant effort but the high winds and the fact that the flames covered some two square miles of fields and hedgeland made the fire uncontrollable at times."

Two people were taken to hospital with smoke inhalation and stress and the fire was put out by 8.25pm.

The cause of the fire is not known.
