£80m annual sales at Oxfam's stores

Thrifty shoppers have helped annual sales at Oxfam's stores jump to £80 million, it was revealed.

Sales at the charity's 730 shops rose 7% during the year to April, Oxfam's director of trading David McCullough told the Mail on Sunday.

And the charity expects sales to rise more than 20% to at least £101 million this financial year as it benefits from hard-pressed shoppers looking to save money.

That compares very well with other high street retailers who have been struggling amid a sales slowdown this year. Official figures showed retail sales slumped a record 3.9% in June, with another fall expected in July when the latest data is released this week.

Mr McCullough, who has been with Oxfam for two years after long stints at Next and Miss Selfridge, said a focus on ethical shopping was also helping the charity.

"Oxfam fits very well in the middle of this changing attitude in the UK about values," he said.

The charity's chain includes 123 bookshops, which last year took £19.1 million making it one of Europe's biggest second-hand booksellers.

In January Oxfam set up a scheme with Marks & Spencer allowing people handing in M&S clothing to receive a £5 M&S voucher. Last week the charity said the arrangement had helped it so far raise an extra £1 million.

Only 5% of Oxfam's staff of 25,000 are paid. And while it pays the same rents as other high street neighbours, its charity status means it pays one fifth of the business rates.
