99 St Bernards abandoned by breeder

A dog breeder who abandoned nearly 100 St Bernards to go on holiday has been given an 18-week prison term for animal cruelty.

Mary Collis, 51, admitted seven counts of causing unnecessary suffering to 85 dogs and one count of failing to meet the welfare needs of 14 dogs.

Collis left the dogs unattended at Wardana Kennels in Brigstock, Northamptonshire, while she went on holiday with her partner to Tenerife, Wellingborough Magistrates' Court was told.

The St Bernards were found by worried members of the public in November last year covered in faeces and urine, without food or water, and many with matted fur and eye problems.

Collis, now of Denby Lane, Wakefield, did not show any emotion as she was jailed. She was also disqualified from keeping any animals for 10 years.

Chairman of magistrates Dr Robin Pugsley told Collis they felt they needed to give an immediate custodial sentence because of the number of dogs affected.

The court heard 99 dogs had been abandoned at the kennels. One was put to sleep on the night of November 29 when they were found.

Another lost its fight for life the following day at a vet, and the court heard a total of 14 dogs had died since, having never recovered from the traumatic experience.

The remaining 83 dogs have since been rehomed after a campaign by the RSPCA.

Dr Pugsley said: "As a trained veterinary nurse you would be in a position to appreciate the suffering to the animals in your care."
