Martin Boyle, 45, was arrested at Guarulhos International Airport on the outskirts of Sao Paulo two weeks ago as he flew into the country to try to get in touch with his teenage daughter.
Mr Boyle's lawyer Alexandre Cerqueira told the BBC his release had been ordered by a judge following a successful legal challenge.
Mr Boyle, a languages expert at the University of Kent, split from the mother of his 16-year-old daughter Rebecca some time ago.
The couple had lived in Brazil but Mr Boyle moved back to the UK after they split up.
The authorities said he owed thousands in child maintenance, with a figure starting at £4,000 being raised to more than £20,000.
Speaking to the BBC after his release Mr Boyle said: "I am very relieved - it all happened very quickly.
"The senior police officer came in and asked, 'Who is the English guy here?' and I put my hand up and he said, 'You are free, you are out of here', and everyone jumped up and cheered and started to clap.
"There were 22 in the cell yesterday, and we were jam packed, but they split us up - one half in one cell and one half in the other."
Mr Boyle said he feared for his safety in the Brazilian jail. "They said I wasn't supposed to be with real criminals but the majority of people there were hardened criminals who happened to be in for child maintenance," he told the broadcaster.
