Afghan death soldier to be named

A British soldier killed in southern Afghanistan is due to be named.

The soldier, from The Black Watch, 3rd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, died as a result of a gun shot wound suffered during a patrol on Thursday with the Afghan National Army close to Musa Qal'eh in Helmand Province.

Next of kin have been informed.

It brings the death toll of British service personnel killed in Afghanistan since the start of operations in October 2001 to 154.

The soldier was taking part in a routine "reassurance" patrol, an MoD spokesman said.

The spokesman for Task Force Helmand, Lieutenant Colonel Nick Richardson, said: "This is another tragic situation where we all feel this great loss.

"Words mean very little in this extremely sad situation but our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of this brave soldier.

"Their pain is our pain and as the years go by we will mourn the loss of this true British hero."

Brigadier-General Richard Blanchette, spokesman for the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), said: "On behalf of ISAF, I offer our condolences to the family and friends of our fallen soldier.

"A sustaining strength in these times of grief comes from the certainty that the fight against the insurgency brings hope of peace to the people of Afghanistan."
