After-school patrols to fight crime

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith has announced £3 million funding for after-school patrols in knife-crime hotspots.

The Government pledged the money for police officers to patrol popular routes to and from schools.

The money will be spent in 10 areas hit by knife crime. Ms Smith said more police would make young people feel safer and discourage them from carrying knives.

"With the clocks going back and the nights drawing in, it is particularly important that young people feel safer walking home from school," she said.

"With more police officers patrolling your streets, we are emphasising our core message that young people do not need to carry a knife for protection - it makes you less safe, not more - and these additional police are there to help protect you."

The 10 pilot areas are: London, Essex, Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Merseyside, the West Midlands, Greater Manchester, Nottinghamshire, South Wales and Thames Valley.

The money will also fund police officers going into schools to discourage children from carrying knives.

Children as young as 11 carry knives because they fear being attacked, a recent report found.

Knife and gun crime has blighted London this year, with 27 teenagers killed in the capital.
