The 62-year-old singer is suffering from a serious case of E.coli bacterial infection and influenza, said a statement on his official website.
It said doctors had advised him to postpone three concerts - November 4, 7 and 10 - which he was due to perform with Billy Joel in the US early next month.
The statement said: "Organisers of the events are working to establish new dates. All patrons who have purchased tickets are being asked to hold on to them until more information is available regarding the proposed rescheduled engagement."
The veteran performer is being treated at the King Edward VII Hospital in central London, according to the Mail on Sunday.
It reported that Sir Elton was taken to the hospital, which has treated members of the Royal Family, on Friday after his condition worsened.
The musician's partner David Furnish spent much of Saturday at the hospital and, as he left, said: "He's OK, he's fine."
Sir Elton has postponed gigs in Sheffield, Newcastle, London, Liverpool and Dublin since October 23 when he contracted flu. The concerts, part of his Red Piano tour, are due to be rescheduled.
Later, Sir Elton's spokesman told The People: "He is recovering from a case of serious influenza with minor complications. We are confident he will be back on stage in the very near future.
"We are also in discussions with our promoters regarding venue availability, as we are hoping to reschedule any lost shows."
