Joe Cooke and his family, from Ealing, west London, were holidaying in Wiltshire. He is believed to have been at the premises with his mother and two brothers when he was struck.
The range had been set up in the extensive grounds of Bernard Allnutt's house, in the village of Fovant, near Salisibury, Sky News said.
Joe was not using a weapon but is thought to have been caught in the cross fire at the address near Salisbury. He was airlifted to hospital in Bristol for emergency surgery but died on Monday afternoon.
The range had been supervised at all times and Joe's death was simply a "tragic accident", Wiltshire Police said.
Chief investigating officer DCI Sue Austin told Sky News: "He just got caught by a pellet.
"Normally you would get a bruise or a nick, but it depends where on the body you get caught. He suffered head injuries.
"It's awful. My officers and I see all sorts of things but this is one of the most emotive things we have ever dealt with."
Joe's mother, Emma, earlier paid tribute to her son after his death saying: "Joe was a gorgeous, cheeky, beautiful, bright, little bundle of joy who lit up the room - our little Indiana Jones."
