Airport workers strike in jobs row

A strike by workers at John Lennon Airport in Liverpool is under way after last-ditch talks failed to resolve a row over jobs.

Up to 150 members of the GMB union have launched an indefinite walkout in a row over plans to make 23 workers compulsorily redundant.

Talks between the union and ground services firm Servisair failed to break the deadlock.

The union has been seeking assurances that no worker would face compulsory redundancy under the company's cost-cutting plans.

The airport said it had been assured that it would be "business as usual" despite the industrial action going ahead.

Contingency plans were in place to make sure that passengers were not inconvenienced, said a spokesman.
