Anger over friendly fire death

The father of a teenage British soldier killed by friendly fire in Afghanistan has said he cannot understand how his son died.

John Foster has demanded a full investigation into the death of his 19-year-old son Robert who was killed along with two other soldiers when a US plane bombed their position.

Asked about the circumstances of his son's death, Mr Foster said: "At the moment I'm very angry but I have nowhere to focus my anger until I find out what happened and how it happened.

"How? Why? How can somebody get something so wrong?"

Mr Foster, from Harlow in Essex, told BBC News 24 that his son was "...a larger than life character. He was always the one up for a dare. He made you laugh and could bring a smile to anyone's face."

Private Foster, of the 1st Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment, and Privates Aaron McClure, 19, and John Thrumble, 21, were killed on Thursday while on patrol in Helmand province.

The three soldiers had been taking part in a fighting patrol to disrupt Taliban activity to the north west of Kajaki.

They came under attack from Taliban insurgents and in a firefight that followed, close air support was called in from two US F15 aircraft.

Nato's International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan has said it will be co-ordinating the investigation into the deaths.
