Another blow for Newcastle fans

Newcastle United fans are coming to terms with defeat by one of the Premiership's minnows following a day of huge demonstrations over the loss of Geordie Messiah Kevin Keegan.

Hours before kick-off in the Magpies' home match against Hull City - the club's first game since Keegan resigned on September 4 - thousands of supporters gathered outside St James' Park to vent their frustration against owner Mike Ashley and the club's board.

But their woes deepened well before the final whistle as the team slumped to a 2-1 defeat to the Tigers, who are enjoying their first run in the top flight of English football.

Earlier, police in high visibility jackets struggled to control the surging crowd at the ground in a noisy but peaceful protest at the club gates.

Fans chanted "sack the board", "we want Ashley out" and "there's only one Kevin Keegan".

The protest was so loud the fans' voices could be heard at Grey's Monument, a 10-minute walk from St James' Park.

Some fans wore "Ashley Out" T-shirts decorated with stickers reading "Down with the Cockney Mafia".

But police said there were no arrests outside the stadium.

Thousands of fans who boycotted the match congregated outside the Old Milburn Entrance of St James' Park.

When the turnstiles opened, they refused to enter the ground and sang "sack the board" loudly and continually. Several tore up their season tickets, throwing the pieces into the air.
