Anti-terror chief reports on NHS

Britain's new security minister will deliver his initial verdict on NHS overseas recruitment procedures following an emergency review ordered by Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Admiral Sir Alan West was ordered to examine potential failings after it emerged eight people being held over failed car bomb attacks in London and Glasgow all had links to the health service.

The former head of the Royal Navy will meet Mr Brown in private and it remained unclear today whether his findings would be made public at this stage.

But his report comes amid criticism of UK anti-terror procedures from the head of Interpol, Ronald K Noble, who accused the Government of "putting UK citizens at risk".

Mr Brown announced a fresh push last week, including the expansion worldwide of a "watch list" of potential terrorists to help warn other countries and new international agreements.

He reinforced his message yesterday, saying an expanded system for sharing data on potential threats was required as "a matter of urgency".

"We do now need more information flowing internationally about who are potential terrorists and who are potential suspects," he told Sky News.

"I think it is very important that we tighten this up and it is something we are looking at as a matter of urgency."

But Mr Noble said Britain was failing to check would-be immigrants against a worldwide database of more than 11,000 terror suspects.

"The guys detained last week could be wanted, arrested or convicted anywhere in the world and the UK would not know," he told the Sunday Telegraph."
