Armed forces to get 2.6% pay rise

The Armed Forces have been awarded a 2.6% pay rise in recognition of their "tremendous" work.

The increase, boosting a private's starting salary from £15,677 to £16,227, is bigger than the 1.9% rise imposed on other public sector workers.

Defence Secretary Des Browne announced that the award, based on the Armed Forces' Pay Review Body's recommendation, would take effect from April 1.

The 2.6% rise will apply to the salaries of all military personnel as well as the longer separation allowance and specialist pay rates.

In addition, there will be a 1% increase in the "X Factor" - a top-up to compensate for the conditions faced by the forces compared to civilians.

"This pay award recognises the tremendous contribution all our Service personnel continue to make at home and overseas," Defence minister Derek Twigg said.

Air Chief Marshal Sir Jock Stirrup, Chief of the Defence Staff, said: "This pay increase is good news for the Armed Forces at a time when their dedication, determination and courage continue to be tested.

"It reflects the outstanding contributions our people and their families are making to the defence of our nation.

"It is also a tangible demonstration of the high regard in which our people are held by the Government and the nation."
