The fight, involving four men, happened shortly after 7am in Brigstock, Northamptonshire.
Two of the men were arrested on suspicion of assault and firearms offences and officers recovered a starting pistol.
A spokeswoman for Northamptonshire Police said: "Members of the public called police to a fight between four men, all believed known to each other, in Back Lane, Brigstock, at 7.15am today.
"Some witnesses reported to police that one of the men had some sort of firearm.
"Police attended and quickly arrested two men, both local. A starter pistol has been recovered by the police."
Both men arrested are in their mid to late 30s, she added.
Inspector Sarah Johnson said: "This incident clearly alarmed members of the public who saw a weapon being produced during a fight.
"We have no way of knowing that it is just a starter pistol and have to respond with armed officers for the protection of the public.
"People tempted to carry items like this should be warned that we will respond as if the weapon is real and that could have serious consequences for them and others."
