Armed police surround siege house

Armed police are continuing to surround a property more than 24 hours after a man barricaded himself and a six-year-old girl in a house.

Police were called to the address in the Eastfield area of Scarborough shortly after 11pm on Monday following initial reports of a domestic disturbance.

North Yorkshire Police said the siege was continuing.

It is thought police negotiators are inside the house talking to the man who it is believed has barricaded himself and the young girl in a bedroom.

Local residents said the man had been drinking. Police were unable to confirm reports the man, who it is thought is aged in his thirties, was armed with a knife.

On Tuesday night the man involved in the siege could be heard shouting to police officers in the garden. At one point he was heard to say: "I'm going to die tonight."

He also made comments about his girlfriend and his domestic arrangements.

Herdborough Road remains cordoned off as the stand-off continues.

The police spokesman said: "Owing to a belief that there was a potential threat to life, the Firearms Support Unit was called to assist with the control of the incident.

"Police negotiators are also at the scene in a bid to bring the incident to a safe conclusion. The police intention remains to resolve the incident without harm to anybody involved. These efforts are still ongoing."
