Assault probe baby dies in hospital

Detectives are investigating the death of a one-month-old baby boy who suffered head injuries at a block of flats.

The child died at Bristol Children's Hospital on Friday night after the incident on Monday at the flats in Torpoint, Cornwall.

He had been in a critical condition and was transferred from Plymouth for specialist treatment.

A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assaulting the unnamed boy in the flat in Quarry Street and has been released on police bail until June.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesman said: "A post-mortem examination will be carried out on Monday, March 10. The incident is being investigated jointly by the CID and the Major Crime Investigation Team."

Investigating officer Detective Inspector Costas Nassaris told the Plymouth Evening Herald: "We are keeping an open mind as to what the nature of the incident is at this time.

"We will obviously be treating this as a serious investigation."

"We will examine the results of expert medical opinion in detail before we decide whether or not it should be treated as a manslaughter or murder inquiry."
