British Airways said it hoped to operate a "full flying schedule" on Saturday for the first time since the terminal's opening day debacle last Thursday.

The lower frequency weekend schedule gives the airport operators some leeway as it prepares to run a full weekday service for the first time from Monday.

A spokesman for BA said: "We plan to operate a full flying schedule to and from Heathrow Terminal 5 on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

"We want to provide a robust and reliable schedule for our customers. We will move to a consistent 100% weekday schedule as soon as we can."

The problems at the airline were expected to cost BA about £16 million, the airline said.

The company said the terminal was now running "very well" and there was no fall-off in bookings as a result of the problems.
