BA to move long-haul flights to T5

BA had hoped to move almost its entire long-haul operation from Heathrow's Terminal 4 to T5 at the end of April. But the shambolic opening of T5 on March 27 with flights axed, bags going astray and huge queues, led BA chief executive Willie Walsh to postpone the long-haul move.
First, BA said the transfer would take place in June. But now the airline has announced that some long-haul flights will move on Thursday, some on September 17 and the rest around the end of October.
Eight long-haul flights will transfer on Thursday, including the eight-times-a-day service to JFK airport in New York.
The other seven destinations are Abuja and Lagos in Nigeria, Bangalore, Beijing, Cairo, Cape Town, and Phoenix in Arizona, USA.
The first of the new batch of flights to arrive at T5 on Thursday will be BA74 from Lagos due to touch down at 5.55am. The first from New York will arrive at 6.25am and the first departure of the new services will be BA117 which is scheduled to leave for New York at 8.55am.
Writing in this week's BA in-house publication British Airways News, Mr Walsh said: "Of course, we still have to see how our move of flights to T5 goes.
"It is a critical time and we have been working closely with (Heathrow operator) BAA to make sure we are ready operationally for this move."
He said T5 was now working well and customers were telling him they were "really enjoying travelling through there".
A further 29 long-haul destinations will move to T5 on September 17, including Nairobi, Washington DC, Chicago, Toronto and Mumbai (formerly Bombay).
