John Hogan, 36, from Bristol, who killed his son Liam after jumping from a Crete hotel balcony with him in his arms in 2006, landed at Heathrow Airport and was escorted out of the airport by police via a back door.

He has been receiving treatment in the Greek capital Athens since he was cleared of murder last year.

Hogan, hobbling on crutches and wearing a white shirt and blue jeans, kept his head down and made no comment as he left the plane accompanied by police officers.

The former tiler has spent three years in Greek prisons and psychiatric hospitals since the incident at the Petra Mare Hotel which also saw Hogan's daughter Mia badly injured.

Liam died of head injuries but Hogan and Mia, then two, survived with broken limbs following the plunge on August 15, 2006.

His flight home comes two weeks after an Athens court decided he had made an adequate recovery and does not pose a risk to other passengers.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said support would be provided to Hogan if he returned to his home in Bradley Stoke, Bristol.

He said: "He is a free man returning to the UK. He has to make his own decision on what he wants to do. We, the police, and other appropriate agencies will provide support in light of the anticipated media interest."
