Bank sorry for lost mortgage mail

A bank apologised after mortgage details of more than 60,000 customers were lost in the post.

Bank of Scotland (BoS) revealed that the mortgage information of 62,000 customers sent in the post had been reported missing.

A computer disc containing the details of the accounts failed to reach the main credit reference agencies, the institution said.

The package was sent via Royal Mail, BoS added, and it was thought the disc has been lost in the post rather than being stolen.

The bank said it was "almost impossible" that any financial fraud could be committed with information held on the disc.

Shane O'Riordain, the bank's communication's manager, told the Herald: "We apologise to our customers for any inconvenience or upset this incident may have caused.

"We have taken immediate steps to protect our customers and make sure this does not happen again.

"We have written to all affected customers to apologise and to reassure them that the risk of fraud is very low."
