Bankruptcy details on stolen computer

A stolen laptop computer contained personal information on more than 100 directors of bankrupt companies, the Insolvency Service said.

It has written to those it believes may have been affected by the theft of equipment from its Manchester offices.

Four laptops were stolen, although only one contained the information about the 122 company directors.

The computer also contains some information about other people with a connection to these companies.

Those affected by the theft include former company directors, insolvency practitioners, and people who were named in documents including creditors, complainants, investors and employees.

A spokeswoman for the Insolvency Service said they were working with police to try to recover the computers stolen from their premises in Manchester city centre on August 28.

Several dedicated telephone helplines have been set up and anyone who has concerns should go to the Insolvency Service website www.insolvency.gov.uk/contactus/laptoptheft.htm to find the appropriate telephone number for their inquiry.

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police said: "We have received a report of a burglary from The Insolvency Service, Manchester. Inquiries are ongoing.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 0161 856 3241 or call Crimestoppers anonymous on 0800 555 111."
