Banned eco-activists will risk jail

Five eco-campaigners are expected to risk jail when they breach a court order preventing them from joining a protest against moves to build a new coal-fired plant at Kingsnorth in Kent.

The five plan to flout bail conditions stopping them attending the second day of the Camp for Climate Action.

They were among more than 20 people arrested in June during a protest on board a coal delivery train outside Drax power station in North Yorkshire.

Lawyers have warned the five they are likely to face prison by declaring themselves to police on arrival at the Kent camp later on Monday.

One of the five, legal assistant Ellen Potts, said: "The prospect of going to prison is a daunting one, but E.ON's proposed new coal-fired power station poses such a threat to the climate that it's something we're willing to face."

About 400 Camp for Climate Action campaigners have now set up camp in a field near Hoo, overlooking Kingsnorth following the first official day of the protest on Sunday.

Activists staged a rally followed by a march to the power station to mark the opening day of the protest.

Campaigners will spend this week taking part in climate change workshops, culminating in a planned day of direct action on Saturday, when more than 1,000 protesters are expected to "shut down" Kingsnorth.

Campaigners are opposed to proposals by the plant's owners, E.ON, to build a new on-site coal-fired facility - the first such plant to be built in Britain for more than 30 years. E.ON maintains the new plant will be cleaner than the one it is replacing.

Kent Police have a total of 1,400 officers on standby from 26 different forces to oversee the protest, including mounted officers from the City of London police force.
