Barclays to axe 1,000 jobs

More than 1,000 jobs are to be axed by banking giant Barclays over the next three years in a move aimed at improving efficiency, staff have been told.

The cuts will be made at the firm's offices in Poole, Dorset, which employs 1,900 staff.

Barclays said it hoped to achieve some of the losses through natural wastage, adding that the jobs would include back office functions.

Steve Pantak, an official with the union Unite, said: "We are very concerned at (Thursday's) announcement which will mean a large reduction of jobs in Poole.

"Unite does however have robust agreements in place and the bank's plans are spread over the next three years, so we will be working with the bank to ensure the maximum number of redeployments and voluntary redundancies.

"We do welcome the news that Barclays will have a new building in the area, albeit smaller, so ending speculation that they may pull out of the area altogether."

Meanwhile nearly 150 jobs at Huntleigh Healthcare will be transferred to Poland as the company struggles to compete with rivals, its bosses announced.

Up to 145 production jobs are under threat at the medical products manufacturer's Luton base as part of a cost-control programme as it tries to stay competitive in fierce UK and world markets.

The company, which currently employs more than 750 people at its Luton offices, will hold talks with staff about the job losses at the site in Dallow Road. Huntleigh, which has been based in Luton since the 1960s, has a purpose-built site in Poland which was completed in January this year.

It plans to phase in the cuts over the next eight months. Staff affected make air-pressure mattresses which help stop bed sores as well as surgical equipment which prevent deep vein thrombosis.
